Sean Adams, of AdamsMorioka in LA, had a lot of great advice for new graphic designers and students.
When talking about technology, he suggested you don't get caught up in the rush. Just because your computer makes it possible for you to finish in 2 hours, doesn't mean you should. Also, when you become faster and more skilled, just because you finish in 2 hours doesn't mean you should only charge for 2 hours. The upside to technology is that you are provided with so many tools that make your job easier and more efficient.
When looking at a portfolio, Sean Adams first looks at the typography, and them he looks for a simple presentation. It's also important to have an online presence like a website of some kind.
When coming up with ideas, he suggests you listen and use the ideas of others. Put good ideas out into the world for others and you will receive ideas in return. write things down like symbols and locations, etc. Also, if you're stuck thinking of an idea, sometimes it helps to think of the "wrong" way to do something. Then use that idea as inspiration.
As for graphic design history, you should use it to broaden your visual vocabulary and understand where you sit in the scheme of history. Also know that design does not necessarily get better with every year. Great designs come from past decades and we should know it and pull from it.
Some Quotes:
"Design makes capitalism work"
"You are in charge of popular culture"
"People treasure books. They don't treasure websites"
